The Neighbourhood Pharmacy Association of Canada (Neighbourhood Pharmacies) is disappointed by the decision to wind down the PrescribeIT® service following the conclusion of federal funding.
Electronic prescribing is a foundational component of a modern, connected healthcare system. Its proven benefits include improved patient safety, reduced medication errors, strengthened oversight of controlled substances, and enhanced collaboration among prescribers and pharmacists. More broadly, it is an essential building block in creating the resilient, efficient, and connected healthcare system that Canadians increasingly expect and deserve.
The experience of PrescribeIT® underscores the need for a strong, sustainable operating and funding model for national digital health initiatives. Solutions of this scale must be supported by coordinated leadership and shared investment from federal, provincial, and territorial governments, alongside system partners who benefit from and contribute to digital transformation.
Neighbourhood Pharmacies will continue to advocate for a nationally consistent, interoperable approach to e-prescribing as part of a broader commitment to a digitally enabled healthcare system. Investments in digital infrastructure are not optional enhancements; they are critical to ensuring safe, effective, and efficient care delivery across Canada.
As the system transitions to an open-standards model, we remain committed to working constructively with governments, Canada Health Infoway, vendors, and healthcare partners to advance sustainable solutions that strengthen connected care for patients and support the long-term resilience of our healthcare system.
